Personal Vehicles

The following is a definition for vehicles used for PERSONAL USE Personal means using the vehicle for private reasons, pleasure purposes, driving to and from work in whole or in part (including a car pool), and may not be used for business or professional purposes.  The vehicle must be less than 4500 kgs; otherwise it is classified as a Commercial Vehicle.   The following is a definition for vehicles used for BUSINESS USE.  The vehicle is used in conjunction with the driver's occupation, other than driving to and from the place of employment.  Please note that additional business liability insurance may be helpful to the owner of the vehicle to cover loss of valuables that are in the vehicle if there was an incident of theft, fire or accident.  The vehicle must be less than 4500 kgs; otherwise it is classified as a Commercial Vehicle.  

Commercial Vehicles

Any motor vehicle of a truck, tractor, van or utility type, used for business or commercial purposes.  This could also be a private passenger type vehicle used for delivery purposes.  In addition, a trailer intended for use with the commercial vehicle is subject to being a commercial vehicle. Exceptions: o used for renting or carrying passengers for hire (see Public) o used for demonstrating or testing o held for sale by an automobile dealer o with a gross vehicle weight no in excess of 10,000 lb.   For more information, consult the Insurance-Canada website for an overview describing the various information and directory pages for insurance for Businesses, Commercial Enterprises, Associations and Non- profits.   

Public Vehicles

This is an vehicle used in the business of carrying passengers along designated routes including sightseeing trips, or outings other than those coming within the definitions of School Bus, or Hotel, Golf or Country Club, Bus, or Rural Mail Delivery Vehicle.   NB: A Taxi is a vehicle used in the business of carrying up to seven passengers to destinations designated by the passenger.  Van Pools use a vehicle owned by an employer used for 1 round trip each day to transport commuters.  

Antique Vehicles

An Antique vehicle is defined as a vehicle that is a collector's item and is over 30 years old and is not modified in any way from the manufacturer's original specifications.  use is generally restricted to parades or exhibitions.  Not used for regular transportation.  The vehicle must have Historic Value license plates where applicable by law. DETAILS: Risks must meet all underwriting criteria and rules of our regular vehicle program The vehicle must be over 30 years old and considered a collector's item The vehicle must not be driven for regular transportation Use generally restricted to parades and auto club exhibitions There must be a current appraisal (within the last 5 years) There must be an up-to-date safety and photographs The value of the vehicle must not be in excess of $50,000 There must be a signed OPCF 19A  

Classic Vehicles

A Classic vehicle is defined as a vehicle that was manufactured at least 15 years ago, but not older than 30 years, and is not modified in any way from the manufacturer's original specifications and is considered a collector's item. DETAILS: Risks must meet all underwriting criteria and rules of our regular automobile program The vehicle must be between 15 and less than 30 years old and considered a collector's item The vehicle must not be drive for regular transportation There must be a current appraisal (within the past 5 years) There must be an up-to-date safety and photographs The value of the vehicle must not be in excess of $50,000 The must be a signed OPCF 19A  

Motor Home (Recreational)

Motor Home Insurance eligibility: This vehicle must be used for the owner's personal recreational purposes. The unit is up to 12.2 metres (40 feet) in length The unit is up to $150,000 in value The unit must be factory built and equipped as a Motor Home The unit must carry additional liability and accident benefits coverage
